Lady Spartans Win Five Set Match with Ridgewater

MCAC Southern Division rivals M State and Ridgewater squared off in a college volleyball contest on Wednesday night in Fergus Falls with the lady Spartans pulling out the competitive match in 5 sets, winning 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-12. 

“Everyone stepped up and did their job when we needed it most,” said head volleyball coach Abby Crowser. “When we focus on doing whatever we can to help our teammates succeed, that is when we play our best volleyball. It’s great when you see the team really pull together during the close games and come out on top.” 

Four members of the lady Spartans had double digit digs, led by Mia Greenmanwith 29 and Taylor Berndt with 18. Sydney Hovland added 15 digs, Corina Mark had a dozen and Lexus Noyes had 7. 

Attack leaders were Kassandra Algarate with 16, Hannah Ekse with 15 and Katie Merrick with 13. Merrick and Ekse led M State in blocks with 6 and 5, respectively. Hovland distributed 42 set assists, had 3 blocks and 8 kills. Megan Dreger added 3 kills, 3 blocks and 7 digs. 

Serving leaders were Hovland (14/14), Dreger (20/21), Berndt (11/12, 1 ace), Algarate (13/15, 3 aces), Greenman (17/20, 3 aces) and Ekse (10/12, 1 ace). 

M State (13-6) will travel to Bemidji next Wednesday to face Oak Hills Christian College in a non-conference match, before heading to Worthington for a conference matchup with Minnesota West on Friday.
