The Pelican Rapids Vikings won their homecoming football game on Friday night, beating the Roseau Rams, 14-8.

“Great win for the guys,” said Head Coach David Haugen of the Vikings. “Real pleased with how we responded in some difficult situations in the second half. We came out focused and set a good tone for the game from the opening kickoff.”

Pelican Rapids ran for 209 yards and compiled 280 yards of total offense. Damien Britten led the Vikings with 107 yards on 21 carries and McHale Korf ran for 74 yards on 16 attempts. Korf also completed 6-of-12 passes for 71 yards. Hayden Christenson hauled in 3 passes for 38 yards.

Korf scored the first touchdown of the night when he ran 8 yards for the score with 8:57 left in the second quarter. A two point conversion pass from Korf to Eli Sytsma gave the Vikings an 8-0 lead.

Britten scored touchdown number two on a 15 yard run with 4:27 remaining in the opening half, giving the Vikings a 14-0 halftime advantage.

Roseau scored their lone TD on a 5 yard run by sophomore running back Ben Olson, who finished with 99 yards on 20 rushing attempts. Olson also scored the two-point conversion to put the score at 14-8 with 4:49 left in the third quarter.

The Viking defense was strong all night long, although they gave up some big plays on the Rams final possession of the night. Roseau moved the ball from their 3 yard line into Pelican Rapids territory on back-to-back carries of 42 and 11 yards by Olson, before the Vikings defense shut them down with just over a minute to play.

Defensive leaders for the Vikings were Hayden Christenson with 10 tackles, 9 of them solo, and Matt Ziebell with 9.5 tackles, 9 of which were solo tackles. He also had 3 tackles for losses.

Pelican Rapids improved to 3-3 with the win. The Vikings will play at Crookston next Friday at 6:00pm.
