Spartans Struggle Offensively in 30-6 Loss to NDSCS

NDSCS held M State to 95 yards of offense, forced three fumbles and recorded five quarterback sacks on Saturday as the Wildcats handed the Spartans a 30-6 loss in Wahpeton. 

 

Devan Greene, Jr. got the home team on the board with 2:57 left in the opening quarter, carrying the ball in from the one yard line. With 9:24 left in the second quarter Marcus Hill snagged a 26 yard scoring toss from Max Race and Spencer Skeesick kicked the extra point to give the Wildcats a 13-0 lead. They increased that lead to 20-0 with 7:23 left in the half on a 40 yard pass from Race to Grant Brown and another PAT kick by Skeesick. A 15 yard field goal by Skeesick as time expired in the first half gave NDSCS a 23-0 halftime lead. 

Following a scoreless third quarter the Spartans notched their only score of the afternoon when Mykhal Chavis caught a 16 yard TD pass from Winston Sweeting just 39 seconds into the fourth quarter. NDSCS closed out the scoring with a 4 yard run by Dontay Watson and another Skeesick extra point kick with 1:13 remaining in the game. 

NDSCS ran for 186 yards and passed for 99 yards, giving them a total of 285 yards of offense. They were led by Watson (17 carries, 86 yards, TD), Jay-Len Brown (9 carries, 58 yards) and Hill (3 catches, 51 yards, TD). Race completed 5-of-16 passes for 99 yards. 

For M State, Sweeting was 14-for-31 throwing the football for 111 yards and a TD. Lucas Maloney hauled in five passes for 42 yards to lead the receivers. Defensively, Ja’leel Williams was in on a team high 13 tackles and Lewis Jacksonhad 11 tackles, including a sack. Keyshawn Prince forced a fumble, which he recovered, and Ce’zaun Enge had a pass interception for the Spartans. 

The Spartans (1-4) had their game Saturday, October 6 against Ridgewater canceled, but will play a road game Sunday at 2:00pm against Mayville State University’s Junior Varsity.
