The Pelican Rapids volleyball team hosted a Heart O’ Lakes Conference matchup with the Frazee Hornets Thursday with the Vikings posting a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 29-27).

“This was the Vikings last home regular season game so we honored seniors Kaylie IsamanAdriana TorresSarah Thompson, and Grace Peterson and their parents,” said Head Coach Heidi Isaman. “The Vikings came into this match 1-2 in the conference and knew we had to play tough to stay with the Hornets defense and powerful outside hitter Paige Oswald. Our outside hitters Ryley Paulson and Riley Berg both did a great job all night cooling off their outside blockers to score some big points for us at the outside pin. We passed pretty well the first set to give setter Sarah Thompson choices in her hitters. Greta Tollefsonand Adriana Torres also did a great job hitting powerfully on the outside. Set 2 we needed to make some defensive adjustments to better defend their outside plus we needed to get our middle hitters more in the game. Once again we passed pretty well so Thompson could start running a more complex offense and get our middles in the game more. This gave us a nice momentum on the offensive end. Kaylie Isaman also served very aggressively for us tonight to get the Hornets out of system a lot of set 2. The Vikings used this to our advantage and Sarah Thompson did a good job of running more complex and getting all hitters in the offense. We started set three a little unfocused and got beat by the Hornets short game. The Hornets took advantage and started to serve very aggressively at us. We really started to struggle with serve receive and had some major lapse in communication. This caused the Hornets to jump right back into the game and the Vikings were on the defensive end too long. A couple big kills by junior Riley Berg and sophomore Greta Tollefson, and senior Adriana Torres helped us get our momentum back and it was a back and forth battle to the end from there.

Leader for the Vikings were Thompson (22 set assists, 9 digs), Torres (14 kills, 6 digs), Berg (10 kills, 5 digs), Isaman (16 digs, 3 aces) Paulson (5 kills, 3 aces) and Peterson (5 digs, 1 ace).

“I would like to send a big thank you to all the seniors and their parents for all their commitment to the volleyball program over their career and you all will be greatly missed,” said Coach Isaman. “I would also like to send a huge thank you to all the elementary students who came out for autograph night and cheered on the Vikings.”
