The Barnesville volleyball team participated in the Minnesota Class A Showcase Tournament at the Volleyball Warehouse in Burnsville on Friday and Saturday, taking third in their pool and playing five matches overall.

“We had a phenomenal weekend,” said Barnesville Head Coach Megan Askegaard. “We started our Friday matches seeing New Life Christian Academy and Wabasso. We snuck passed NCLA with a stellar come from behind victory to take them in 3 sets. We beat them in the first set, they came back to take set 2 and in set 3 we were down 7-13 before we were able to side out and get the ball back in our control. Kya Anderson went on a huge serving run to us to bring us to 11-13 before they were able to come up with a kill. We continued to attack them at the net and played great defense to come up with the W. We played a tough Wabasso team who had a great outside hitter that caused some problems on our side, however we played right with them and were able to find some hole in their defense.”

The Trojans had one more round of pool play on Saturday where they played Wabasha-Kellogg at 9:00am. “We struggled to get things rolling on our side first thing in the morning,” said Askegaard. “We made too many blocking and attacking errors in the first set. The second set had us constantly playing from just a couple points behind and not able to string a rally together. We tied the game at 16 and then took the lead to cruise to the finish of the set with a 25-22 win. Elora Passaled our attack with finding some open spots on the court. We fell in the 3rd set, but played great defense against a good team.”

By finishing third in their pool the Trojans were placed in the Bronze Division of the Tournament where they beat Underwood 2-0 (26-24, 25-12) and lost to Canby 2-0 (26-24, 25-14). “Canby was a tough team that played really scrappy defense,” reported Coach Askegaard. “They had a smart, athletic setter that was really hard for our blockers to get a good read on early. We left too many holes up on the net and allowed their hitters to come at our defense. The girls always came together and fought back in each play, they were really just too much for us at this point in the set. Elora made the All-tournament team. Great opportunity for us to see some great competition.”

Stat leaders for Barnesville in the tournament were Elora Passa (36 kills, 6 blocks, 33 set assists, 37 digs, 3 aces), Claire Meyer (20 kills, 4 blocks, 12 digs, 2 aces), Emily Condon (8 aces, 18 kills, 66 digs), Samantha Passa (12 kills, 4 blocks, 44 digs), Kya Anderson (77 digs, 3 ace serves) and Kimberly Maesse (49 assists, 30 digs).
