Four Turnovers Prove Costly as M State Falls in Worthington

The M State football team compiled 577 total yards on Saturday, but lost a shootout to Minnesota West 58-38 in Worthington. Three lost fumbles and an interception proved costly to the Spartans in the loss.

 

The Spartans fell behind 23-0 after one quarter as the Blue Jays scored on an early safety, a pair of short runs and a 90 yard pass. 

Sekou Doukoure hauled in a 13-yard pass from Winston Sweeting early in the second quarter and the two point conversion pass to Alexander Sterling cut the lead to 23-8, however, Minnesota West scored 21 unanswered points to open up a 44-8 halftime advantage. 

The Blue Jays extended their lead to 51-8 with an early third quarter score, but the Spartans answered with a 7-yard TD run by Mykhal Chavis and a two-point conversion pass to Ce’zaun Enge to make it 51-16. M State then recorded a 13-yard scoring pass from Sweeting to Dion Munerlyn and a two-point pass to Kiandra Gosha to cut the lead to 51-24. A 3-yard pass to Sterling from Sweeting made it a 51-30 game and a fourth quarter run of 12 yards my Dion Munerlyn, followed by a conversion run by Sweeting brought the Spartans to with 13 at 51-38. An 85-yard interception return by Steven Lucas of the Blue Jays ended another Spartan scoring threat with 2:19 remaining and the extra point kick by Caleb Tinklenberg tacked on the final point in their 58-38 win. 

Sweeting, who was the MCAC Offensive Player of the Week last week, completed 29-of-55 passes for 401 yards and 3 TDs. Alexander caught five balls for 91 yards, Doukoure had 4 catches for 80 yards and Lucas Maloney had a team high nine receptions for 67 yards. Munerlyn was the leading rushing with 46 yards on 9 carries and Chavis added 44 yards on 11 attempts. M State had 446 passing yards and 131 rushing yards in the game, while Minnesota West had 392 yards of offense, 238 through the air and 154 on the ground. 

Defensively, Keyshawn Prince and Darrell Williams each recorded a sack, while Andrew Nelson and Ja’leel Williams shared a sack. Curtis Edwards was in on 11 total tackles and Kyle Zuber led the team with 7 solo tackles. 

M State will host Northland Community College on Saturday at 1:30pm in Fergus Falls.
