The Pelican Rapids volleyball team hosted the Perham Yellowjackets in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference matchup Thursday with Perham pulling out a 3-1 (25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 25-13) victory.

“We knew this would be a back and forth battle and that is exactly what is was,” said Head Coach Kaylie Isaman of the Vikings.  “The girls started strong hitting very aggressively out of the outside.   Ryley Paulson and Riley Berg were strong at the pins all night to power through their double block.  We had some trouble getting our middles and right sides in the game and not setting them consistently enough to start the game.  Perham served the ball well and we had some trouble receiving the short ball.  Some lack of communication created a few unforced errors in the first set loss.  Set 2 we knew we needed to communicate better and all do our roles.  The Yellowjackets were scoring on the back side and we needed to make some defensive adjustments to slow them down.  Defensive specialists Grace Peterson and Kaylie Isaman did a great job on these adjustments and we started to get a lot more digs to force the Yellowjackets to mix up their offense more.  Greta Tollefson produced a few big blocks to get the momentum to shift our way while JeNea Femling came off the bench and had 2 big kills for us to put us ahead.  The Vikings fought back hard and played very aggressively but came up short in set 2.  Set 3 we started strong again.  Adriana Torres really started to execute and was very powerful at the net to start.  The Vikings served well to get Perham out of system for a long stretch.  Kaylie Isaman played great defense and received her career 1000 dig.  Grace Peterson had a great serving run to give us a 24-20 lead and we held on to win set 3.  Set 4 the Vikings struggled serve receiving right away and lost our intensity.  We gave Perham too many free balls to keep the momentum on their side and the Yellowjackets took advantage to seal the deal.  It was a great night of volleyball and we want to congratulate Kaylie Isaman for earning her 1000 dig.”

Stat leaders for the Vikings were Isaman (22 digs), Torres (13 digs, 9 kills), Peterson (12 digs), Thompson (11 digs, 25 set assists), Paulson (8 kills, and Berg (8 kills).

The Vikings will travel to Wadena for a section matchup on Monday.
