The Hillcrest boys’ basketball team is coming off a 21-7 overall record and a terrific 15-1 mark in the Little Eight Conference. They lost Preston Berge to graduation, but second-year head coach Donavan Rogness has everyone else back and talented senior class leading them. Several of the Comets were also a part of the State runner-up football team this fall.
“The highlight of our season was the growth of our players from the start of the season to the end,” said Rogness. “They needed to find their new identity as a team, and they did that so well.”
Senior letter winners are Ethan Swedberg, Lincoln Nash, Sean Berge, Drew Fischer, Kian Stender, Zane Holmquist and Griffin Haus. Juniors Sam Swenson and Drake Veldhouse, and sophomore Will Selvig will also be expected to contribute at the varsity level.
“We are very senior heavy with five of the seven seniors having played football,” noted Coach Rogness. “We’re hoping to use the energy from the football season to carry over to the start of the basketball season. Our strengths are our hard working guys and their desire for team first.”
Rogness will be assisted by Sam Nash, Andy Stender and Nate Selvig.
Coach Rogness say Pelican Rapids, Henning, West Central Area and Park Christians are the top contenders in Section 6A.
