The first touchdown of the night was setup by a halfback pass from Dane Kanwischer to Owen Paulson that covered 53 yards. Quarterback Griffin Mauer then carried the ball over the goal line from one yard out and booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead. The Spartans made it 14-0 late in the first quarter on a 44 yard run by Hudson Hirt and another Mauer PAT.
Following a fumble recovery by Pee Wee Bethel in the second quarter, Fergus Falls running back Caleb Fronning scored on a 5-yard run and Josh Horgen added the extra point, cutting the Orono lead to 14-7. Fronning had a 30-yard run during the drive to setup the TD.
Orono increased their lead to 20-7 on the first possession of the third quarter when Hirt scored on a 4-yard run. The Otters made it 20-14 by capping a 63-yard scoring drive with a 15-yard TD pass from Bethel to Micah Johnson. Horgen’s kick added the 14th point.
The Spartans then drove 65 yards, scoring on a 3-yard run by Kanwischer and a successful two-point conversion run by Mauer. They added a 50 yard touchdown run by Bennett Halverson and another two-point conversion for a 36-14 final.
Hirt led the Spartans with 157 rushing yards on 23 carries. Mauer completed 5-of-12 passes for 126 yards.
Fronning led Fergus Falls with 17 rushing attempts for 109 yards. He also caught 3 passes for 39 yards. Bethel ran for 35 yards on 6 carries and completed 9-of-16 passes for 82 yards. The Otters had 226 total yards in the game.
Fergus Falls ends their season with a record of 8-3. Orono improved their season record to 8-2. They will now face Grand Rapids on US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday.
