I always love getting updates on how area players are doing after their high school careers are over. Several area athletes have played at the next level through the years and with all of the coverage we provide of our area high school teams it becomes hard for a one-man crew (me) to keep up on all the accomplishments of former area standouts. I rely heavily on parents and fans to provide me with updates on these young men and women and always love to hear about their successes. So, if you have anything to report on any players from the area please forward the information to me at cosports@prtel.com. Here are a couple of updates on a pair of former Fergus Falls High School athletes, Ellie Colbeck and Isaac Johnson.
Fergus Falls High School graduate, Ellie Colbeck, now a senior at South Dakota State University, has been introduced as a Kay Yow Servant Leader Award recipient by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. She will wear a Servant Leader patch on her jersey this season to recognize her connection to Coach Yow’s enduring legacy. More information about Yow and the award can be found at gojacks.co/KayYowServantLeader.
The Jackrabbits posted a win in their season opener on Monday night, beating Creighton, 78-62, in Omaha, Nebraska. Colbeck was part of the 8-player rotation, playing 18 minutes and scoring 3 points. They will open their home schedule on Friday night against Rice.
Former Fergus Falls High School Hockey standout Isaac Johnson, now a forward for the Brooks Bandits of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), was recently named as one of the NAPA Auto Parts 3 Stars of the Week. Johnson picked up three goals, three assists and six points in two games for the Bandits.
In just his fourth game since returning from injury, the Bemidji State University commit notches his first career BCHL hat trick on Friday in an 8-0 road win over the Sherwood Park Crusaders. He potted a power-play goal, a shorthanded marker and one even strength, while also adding a helper for a four-point night. He was named first start of the game. A night later, he collected a pair of assists in a 4-3 home loss to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
Johnson now has six goals, four assists and 10 points in five contests this season.
