Here is Head Coach Missy Foslien's recap of the match.
It was a hard fought battle tonight. The Knights have faced Parkers Prairie in tournament play for the last three years. This year wasn’t ours. Outstanding play by seniors Izzy Puchalski and Madi Fagre was just not enough to grab the win. Those two seniors will be so very missed in our program.
Set 1: The Knights looked rough in the first set. We were down 5-9 when we called our first timeout and then 7-16, burning our second. It just took us so long to shake off nerves, and we had difficulty in serve receive and finding open areas on the Panthers side of the court. We inched our way back for a while, but then Brinley Ulrich had two nice kills, and Jaclynn Nelson came up with an ace block to put us within three, 14-17. Madi Fagre had a beautiful run of serves, tying the game 21-21. Some mistakes from the Panthers and a kill from freshman Piper Sanstead at point 24, gave us the miraculous comeback victory in set 1, 25-21. Notable players in set 1: Madi Fagre with 9/9 serving and 1 ace; Libero Hayden Schei passed well in serve receive averaging a 2.1; Izzy Puchalski was all over the floor and tallied 9 digs.
Set 2: We started set two stronger. It was back and forth play until 7-7. We got down 11-16 and then 12-18. Parkers Prairie found our rotation that we struggled to get out of and we just could not get things going offensively this set. We could force errors, but we needed to quit making our own! Set two final score 20-25. Madi Fagre led with 4 kills, Izzy Puchalski added 3.
Set 3: Brinley Ulrich set the tone right away with a couple of big plays to start. We were up 7-4, then down 9-13 with a string of errors. We came back though to tie it up, 13-13, but then let errors bring us back 13-16. We tied it up again at 16-16 and then again 19-19 and even were ahead 21-19. But Parkers came out of that timeout and took the lead 22-23. We had chances but just could not finish, losing 23-25.
Set 4: Another close start, back and forth up until 15-15. A run of missed opportunities, put us down 15-18. We pushed back, 19-20, and were tied 23-23, after Jaclynn Nelson had a string of ace blocks. A couple of costly errors ended the game for us and the season; 23-25.
We don’t see a lot of our section teams throughout the season. We came in as the sixth seed with a 500 record, and proved that while our win/ loss record was so/so, our heart and grit and post season drive, was still there. The Knights ended their season 15-15. Again, we will miss our senior leaders, Madi Fagre, Izzy Puchalski, Abbi McGee, and Kylie Ring. They are all great volleyball players, and even better humans. Good luck to the remaining teams.
