In a classic pitcher’s duel, it came down to clutch hitting in the bottom of the 7th, as Fergus Falls Post 30 walked off Detroit Lakes with a dramatic 3-2 win Saturday afternoon in Wahpeton.

Isaac Ellison was locked in on the mound, striking out 11 while allowing just 2 unearned runs and 1 walk over a complete 7-inning effort. His counterpart, Caden Salber, was equally tough for Detroit Lakes—holding Post 30 to just 6 hits and 3 walks while pitching into the final inning.

Post 30 cracked the code just in time.  Cam Wiederich sparked the rally in the 7th with a lead-off single and Logan Larson laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt, moving Wiederich to second. Carston Fronning followed with an infield single, and Hunter Powers reached on a fielder’s choice, putting runners on the corners. That brought up Levi King, who wasted no time—ripping the first pitch he saw down the third base line. Wiederich raced home with the winning run, sending Post 30 to 2-0 in the tournament.

Detroit Lakes got on the board first, plating a run in the opening frame, but Post 30 answered immediately. After a Powers single and a DL error allowed Brock Scheuerman to reach, back-to-back walks to King and Micah Johnson forced in a run to tie it at 1-1.

Fergus Falls took a 2-1 lead in the third when Scheuerman doubled with two outs, and Johnson delivered an RBI single to bring in courtesy runner Jon Dent. DL tied it again in the fifth after a pair of Post 30 fielding miscues allowed a run to score, setting the stage for the late-inning dramatics.

While the offense struggled to get going early, Ellison remained steady, keeping the Laker bats quiet and giving Post 30 the opportunity to win it late. The team came through with three of their six hits in the 7th to walk it off in style.

Coach Thielke’s Comments:
“This was a gritty win. Both teams got quality starts from their pitchers, and in the end, we were able to break through when it mattered most. Credit to DL—they played solid defense, and Salber kept us off balance with his off-speed and breaking stuff all afternoon. Our boys were grinders today—it took us a while to adjust, but when we did, it came at the right time. Ike was solid, and once Cam Wiederich set the table to lead off the 7th, I knew the guys behind him would find a way to bring him home.”
