After the first day of the Class AA State Girls Golf Tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, the Detroit Lakes Lakers have an 8 stroke lead over Minnewaksa Area.  Pequot Lakes senior Genevieve Birkeland is the first day medalist with a 73, one stroke ahead of DL freshman Sophie Christianson (74) and two strokes in front of Totino-Grace senior Kaitlyn Burstad (75).

Hawley senior Sophie Cook fired a 77 and sits in sixth place, Park Rapids Area seventh-grader Natalie Martin turned in an 83 and is tied for 20th place.  Annie Mayer of Fergus Falls, competing in her fifth straight state tournament, came in with an 87 and is tied for 35th place, while senior Bella Snobl of Barnesville is tied for 65th after shooting a 94.

"Annie struggled a bit in the first 5 or 6 holes, but then played an amazing middle portion of her round from holes 7 thru 15, playing those hole at one-over par," noted Fergus Falls head coach Ben Jurgens.  "The last few holes were a bit of a struggle coming in.  Annie is the ultimate competitor.  She has a great mindset for the game of golf and never quits, and that showed in the middle 9 holes of her round."
