The two teams traded runs in the early going, but a 7 run third inning gave the Johnnies a commanding lead. The Comets would chip away at the lead to come within four, but again St. John's responded with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Hillcrest attempted a rally in the final inning but it would be cut short.
Hillcrest starter Luke McGuire went 2 2/3 with five strikeouts, while Ethan Swedberg finished the game pitching 3 1/3 with five strikeouts.
Griffin Haus led the Comets at the plate going 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Teammates Dane Larby (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Logan Kowalski (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Will Heggland (1-for-2, 3 RBI) each had multiple runs batted in for Hillcrest.
The Comets (0-3) will return home Monday as they host Lake Park-Audubon at 4:30 p.m. at American Legion Field.
