The top-seeded Alexandria girls’ basketball team defeated second-seeded Fergus Falls, 73-52 on Thursday night in Detroit Lakes to claim the Section 8AAA championship.  The Cardinals led 40-21 at the half and shot 52% on the night, while holding the Otters to 35% shooting.  Alexandria improved to 24-4 on the season as they featured a balanced scoring attack with five girls reaching double digits.

Hadley Thul (16 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists), Chloe Scholl (15 points), MaCee Linow (14 points), Kate Hennessy (11) and Allie Haabala (10 points) all scored in double figures.  The Cardinals also took excellent care of the ball with only 7 turnovers in the game.

Fergus Falls got off to a slow start, but after trailing by 19 at the half they were able to come out and cut the lead to 12 with just under 11 minutes to play in the game.  A couple of turnovers led to transition buckets at that point as Alexandria once again built their lead.  The Otters won the rebounding battle, 30-29 and made 14-of-20 free throws on the night.

Hattie Fullhart (19 points, 7 rebounds) had a big night for the Otters and Ruby Ellison hit 5 3’s on the way to a 15 point performance.  She also secured 7 rebounds.  Brynn Sternberg dished out 7 assists and Carlee Hirst added 7 points and 7 boards.

“The girls’ left everything on the floor tonight against one of the best teams in the state,” noted head coach Josh Steer of the Otters.  “I thought Hattie turned in a tremendous effort for us.  We will miss our seniors and I would like to thank them for all they have contributed to the program.  They really have made an impact on this team, beyond the game of basketball.  They leave us with a strong foundation to build on.”

Fergus Falls ends their season with a record of 21-8.
