Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton prevailed in a 5 set marathon match on Tuesday night in their Section 8AA volleyball semifinal with Barnesville.  The Rebels won 25-20, 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-12.  “What a great night of volleyball for both sides of the court,” commented Barnesville head coach Megan Askegaard. “We kicked off the night with a little rocky start making a few too many errors early on in serve receive. DGF took full advantage of these errors and really took off making some big plays while we were back on our heels too much allowing them to attack us. I was pleased with how well we battled in this first set and gave ourselves some momentum moving into the second set. DGF is great at hanging around and making some big plays on defense. They do not let balls drop on the court without full effort going after each ball.”

Abby John and Lexi Hoeft led the attack for the Trojans with15 and 13 kills, respectively.  Addy Rassmussen added 6 kills. John also contributed 78 solo blocks, while Allison Axness had 3 solo blocks and 4 block assists.  Emmalyn Bergman distributed 17 set assists and Sophie Frederick added 11.  Defensive leaders were John (12 digs) and Macie Pauna (14 digs).  Rassmussen and Bergman added 7 digs apiece and Hoeft had 6.

Leaders on the serving line were Axness (15/15), Bergman (13/14), Aubryn Hinsz (17/19), Rassmussen (16/18), John (19/22, 3 aces) and Hoeft (9/12).

“I was extremely pleased with how well our defensive block made some adjustments on the net and really put up a wall for the attackers to have to swing around,” added Coach Askegaard. “We made some great serving runs and our defense held strong to keep our runs going. DGF has many offensive weapons and they were able to find some tip holes in our defense and put down a few too many easy points. Danielle Boyd (20 kills, 24 digs), their junior hitter did an outstanding job attacking when we were taking them out of system and preventing them from running their big go to hitters on offense. Our passes were just a little off tonight due to the some tough serving from the Rebels and we really had to work extra hard to put a ball up to our killers on the net. Both sides had the momentum at times and you could really feel that tournament energy in the Moorhead high gym. Our girls battled and fought for every point especially when they were down. I am so proud of how hard our girls worked day in and day out this season. Our record and games early on didn’t defy what a great team we really were. We peaked at exactly the right time this season and that is all I can ask for. The girls left it all on the court tonight and didn’t give up without a fight.”

DGF will now face Hawley, a 3-2 winner over Wadena-Deer Creek, for the Section 8AA championship at 7:00pm Saturday in Moorhead.
