Hillcrest Lutheran Academy survived a thrilling 5-set match with Breckenridge on Tuesday night to claim the North Sub-Section 6A volleyball championship and advance to the 6A finals against West Central Area on Saturday at 7:00pm at the Kennedy Secondary School in Fergus Falls. The Comets fell behind 2 sets to none, losing 25-22 and 25-21 before battling back to force a fifth set with wins of 25-13 and 25-14 in sets 3 and 4.  The deciding set saw the Cowgirls serve set point twice without success before the Comets closed it out 17-15.

“We had a chaotic start to the night which could be attributed to many factors like sitting for the first match, the loud crowd, and just plain nerves,” assessed Hillcrest head coach Debi Foss.  “Even though the scores were close in the first two sets, we were not in our normal rhythm.  Breck ran a great offense and was scrappy all night.  Going into set three we knew we needed to just breathe and relax.  It worked, and the momentum turned in our favor.  The girls relaxed and we finally got some things going.”

Leading the Comets were Emily Adams (20 kills, 6 set assists, 12 digs, 2 blocks), Ruby Peterson (19/19 serving, 2 kills, 47 set assists, 24 digs, 5 blocks), Ella Knutson (15 kills, 7 digs, 6 blocks, 2 aces), Elsa Retzlaff (10 kills, 21 digs, 3 aces), Maddie Miller (16 digs), Kaia Miller (3 digs, 2 blocks), Kenzie Miller (10 kills, 3 blocks) and Chloe Walkup (20/20 serving, 1 ace, 10 digs).  Kate Olstad added an ace serve.

“It’s hard to put into works the night, because so many things were happening,” noted Coach Foss.  “Our fans were amazing and we felt so supported.  I’m so proud of the girls for pushing through the glass ceiling and making it to the section championship.  This season we’ve claimed our theme of G.R.I.T.T., and tonight we clung to those values and got the victory!”

Hillcrest has a school record 27 wins this season and enters their contest against the defending 6A champion Knights with a 27-3 overall record.
