Hillcrest and Pelican Rapids battled through a five set non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday night with the Comets prevailing, 25-17, 22-25, 25-14, 20-25, 15-12. “The temps were frigid in our gym tonight, but the competition was heated,” reported Hillcrest head coach Debi Foss. “We had moments when we handled the Pelican Rapids Vikings well and moments when we didn’t.”
The Comets were led by Emily Adams (21 kills, 12 digs, 2 ace serves), Ruby Peterson (5 kills, 48 set assists, 14 digs, 1 ace serve), Ella Knutson (12 kills, 20 digs, 1 ace serve), Elsa Retzlaff (4 aces, 3 kills, 26 digs, 16/16 serving), Kaia Miller (5 kills, 9 digs), Chloe Walkup (15 digs, 21/21 serving), Maddie Miller (11 digs) and Aaveah Stender (9 kills).
“Freshman Aaveah Stender did a great job of stepping in for Kenzie Miller who was out sick tonight,” noted Coach Foss. “Her long reach was effective and came through in the last few plays of the night. We attacked the ball a ton tonight, but we were not super-efficient so we will have to clean that up heading into Thursday’s game.”
Anna Roisum (13 kills, 5 digs), Grace Backstrom (12 kills, 5 digs), Hazel Haugrud (6 kills, 17 digs, 3 aces), Morgan Korf (28 digs, 1 ace), Arianna Hovland (20 digs, 2 kills, 1 ace) and Kamryn Kirkwood (25 set assists, 11 digs, 1 ace).
“We have been working hard and improving our net play and were ready to battle with the powerful Comets,” reported Pelican Rapids head coach Heidi Isaman. “Even though it was a disappointing loss, I was extremely proud of these girls tonight. We made some big steps forward and had a much better flow together. We hope to build off our improvements made tonight as we will prepare for our next conference battle against Hawley on Thursday.”
Hillcrest will travel to Parkers Prairie on Thursday for a Little Eight Conference contest.
