The Fergus Falls girls’ soccer team recorded a 4-3 win at Detroit Lakes on Tuesday. The first half ended 1-1 and the Otters scored 3 unanswered goals in the second half to build a 4-1 lead. The Lakers mounted a comeback, scoring twice in the last 13 minutes to make it a one goal game, but the Otters were able to finish it off for the win.
Detroit Lakes took a 1-0 lead one minute into the game after miscommunication by the Otters. Fergus Falls struck back 15 minutes later when Shay Katzenmeyer put a beautiful ball on the foot of Aubree Nelson who broke away from the defense and pounded it home. DL received a penalty kick with 10 seconds left in the first half and Ava Thompson came up with a huge save to keep the score tied.
In the second half Lydia Johnson put another great pass on Aubree Nelson’s foot and she scored her second of the night. Avery Tonneson delivered a pass to Edy Helgeson and Edy drove to the net and tucked it into the corner. Aubree Nelson passed the ball to senior captain Julia Aguilar who chipped a shot over the head of the DL keeper for a 4-1 lead.
“It was a good game between two evenly matched teams,” said head coach Ben Jurgens of the Otters. “Both sides had numerous scoring chances.”
Fergus Falls (5-8-1) will host Alexandria in their final home game on Thursday night.
