Underwood defeated Battle Lake 3-1 (22-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-11) in a Little Eight Conference volleyball match on Tuesday night. “Battle Lake came out really strong and ready to play hard,” said Underwood head coach Breck Grove. “They used their strong attack to keep us out of system and scrambling. We didn't respond well at the beginning and made lots of errors and played very inconsistent volleyball. Towards the end of the first game, we pulled together to get things going and we were able to push back into the match with steady play, gaining the momentum.”
The Rockets were led by Kallyn Grove (30 set assists, 9 kills, 18/18 serving, 2 aces, 12 digs, 1 solo block, 2 block assists), Mily Albjerg (16 kills, 10/13 serving, 3 aces, 8 digs), Esme Larsen (19/20 serving, 2 aces, 9 kills), Sia Olson (26 digs, 21/22 serving, 3 aces), Lauren Hexum (13/14 serving, 2 aces, 9 digs), Hannah Hexum (8/9 serving), Clara Mark (5 digs) and Emma Dirkman (5 kills).
“I was pleased with how my girls powered through their shaky play at the beginning and began controlling what we could control on our side of the court,” said Coach Grove. “Battle Lake is a strong team, so this was a good win for us. Our next game is at home against CGB on Thursday.”
Leaders for Battle Lake were Kenady Cameron (14 kills, 7 digs), Sophie Akerman (18 assists, 20 digs) and Kinley Bormann (6 kills, 2 blocks). Marlie Bladow and Kelsey Christensen were both 100% serving on the night.
“The girls got out to a fast start,” said Battle Lake head coach Jenny Roisum. “We played with a ton of energy and fire to take the first set. Underwood rebounded nicely and controlled sets two through four. We made small comebacks but could never find momentum. Underwood served well and forced the Battlers out of system for most of the match. The Rockets outsides were tough and Kallyn Grove took control in sets 3 and 4 to finish us off.”
