It was a sweep at Morris on Tuesday night for the West Central Area Knights volleyball team. Coming off of a rough loss last Thursday to Sauk Centre, the girls worked hard tonight, trying to do better and be better than we last played. WCA ended the match in 3 sets, winning 25-22, 25-16 and 25-17.
It is always a fight, and the first set was just that. The Knights battled back and forth with the Tigers. We played choppy in the first set, never gaining more than two or three points each possession. Izzy Puchalski had two service runs putting us up 12-7 and then late in the game the Tigers went on a five point run to close in on us 20-20. Izzy again went on a little run ending her serving streak at 23-20. It was back and forth, we missed a game point serve but gained the point back ending it at 25-22. We played incredible defense, Macy Grosz had 11 digs and Sophie Sanstead added 7, while Izzy added 6 just in set one. Mya Foslien had 6 kills also.
Game 2 we jumped out to an early lead, up 18-7 at one point. Our focus was to not let teams gain more than 3 points/service. We let them come back within three points but pulled away for an easy win set 2, 25-16. Macy had 8 digs and Madi Fagre and Mya each had 6. Sophie Sanstead had a nice service run as did Wylie McNally.
Game 3 was still a little choppy, but we kept the intensity. Wylie McNally came alive on the right side with 5 kills. Jaclynn Nelson went down in the game with a rolled ankle so Brinley Ulrich stepped into the middle position and added 2 big kills. We kept the lead the entire game ending 25-17. I have to give props to setter Macy Grosz. She hustled tonight and did a fabulous job on defense. Sophie Sanstead and Madi Fagre also came in clutch picking up a lot of short plays on the left side. Izzy Puchalski and Mya Foslien had some incredible saves as well. It’s nice to see more than one player with double digits in the kill area, so it was an all-out team effort, and I am proud of how they bounced back after being so humbled last week by Sauk. Next match is at home against Benson on Thursday.
Stat leaders for the lady Knights were Grosz (11/11 serving, 2 aces, 22 digs, 34 set assists), Sanstead (9/10 serving, 9 digs) Foslien (11/11 serving, 10 digs, 13 kills), McNally (11/13 serving, 1 ace, 14 digs, 10 kills), Fagre (12/14 serving, 15 digs, 4 kills), Puchalski (10/13 serving, 3 aces, 5 kills, 12 digs, 1 block) and Nelson (5 kills).
