Pelican Rapids recorded a first round Section 6A playoff softball victory over Rothsay on Monday, winning 7-4. The Vikings scored once in the third and 4 times in the fourth to open up a 5-0 lead, however, the Vikings struck for four in the top of the fifth, trimming the lead to 5-4. The Tigers gave themselves some breathing room with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
“A good playoff win at home against a well-coached Rothsay team,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach Derrick Nelson. “Zayli Arrow (3-3, BB, 4RBI) had three big two-out hits to knock in four runs for us. Zayla Arrow (7IPm 4H, 4ER, 5K) pitched out of a couple of jams and had good defense behind her today.”
Other hitting leaders for the Vikings were Linea Thomas (2-4, 2R, RBI), Hazel Haugrud (1-3, R, 2RBI), Claudia Gurath (1-3, 2R) and Ava Simpson (1-3, R).
Pelican Rapids (#4 West) will travel to Morris on Thursday to take on Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (#1 West) at 4:00pm.
In the other half of the bracket, West Central Area (#2 West) was a 15-0 winner of Ashby (#7 West), and Wheaton/Herman-Norcross (#3 West) shutout Hancock (#6 West), 8-0.
In the East, top-seeded Browerville defeated number eight Brandon-Evansville 4-2; Parkers Prairie (#4) lost to New York Mills (#5), 8-4; second-seeded Swanville topped number seven Frazee, 3-1; and number three Upsala was a 10-0 winner over number six, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
