The West Central Area lady Knights had a 4-0 week with a double header sweep of Benson on Wednesday and two more wins in a double header with Minnewaska Area on Thursday.  WCA beat Benson 4-2 and 11-1, and then defeated the Lakers 13-6 and 7-6 in eight innings.  “Overall, we as coaches, are more than delighted with how the girls performed in those four games,” said Head Coach Vanessa McNamara of the Knights.  “It was a lot of softball in a 24-hour period, but so many personal bests were achieved.  7 home runs in 24 hours is fun for them and fun for us.”

WCA broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning in the first game against the Braves on Wednesday.  Highlights included a home run from Nora Anderson, two doubles from Zoey Fuhrman, and hits from Addison Staples, Madison Fagre and Anderson.  Lily Mahoney struck out 9 in the circle.  “It was beautiful outside and so fun to be outside playing ball when we don’t need hand warmers,” stated Coach McNamara.

In game two, the lady Knights scored runs in every inning and out-hit the Braves 12-3.  Fagre, Anderson and Staples all homered with the drive by Staples ending the game by the ten-run rule in the fifth inning.  Fuhrman and Alaina Sykora each had multiple hits and Mahoney pitched all five innings to earn the win.

The Knights traveled to Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood on Thursday and opened the double dip with a 13-6 win, collecting 13 hits in the game.  A 7-run sixth inning helped secure the win.  Izzy Puchalski recorded her first over the fence home run.  Fagre and Staples each hit two doubles.  Mahoney had 9 strikeouts.

Game two was a battle.  With the score knotted at 2-2, Minnewaska Area scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.  The Knights responded with 4 of their own in the bottom of the inning and the two teams went to the eighth tied at 6-6.  Sykora provided the heroics in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off over the fence home run.  Mahoney added a triple and Mya Foslien hit the ball extremely well.  Mahoney again struck out nine batters, earning her fourth win of the week.  “Errors really hurt us in this game,” reported Coach McNamara.  “We made more errors in this game along than the last three games combined.  Playing four games in 24 hours definitely brought out a few mental lapse moments, but in the end they came through.  Our outfield defense was clutch.”
