Versteeg and Wellman Earn Medals in 3200, Starzl Places 4th in Long Jump, McConn Advances to Finals in 400

The Fergus Falls girls’ track and field team competed on day one of the Section 8AA meet at Rocori on Wednesday.  The first day of competition featured prelims in all running events from the 800 meter run on down.   The top 8 finishers in the Section meet in each event move onto Saturday’s finals at Detroit Lakes.  Full Results here

Finals were held in the 3200 meter run with Lauren Eilers of Willmar (10:55.26) and Olivia Goebel (11:09.32) of Albany qualifying for state.  Citori Halbe (11:20.84) of Alexandria took third, Estee Versteeg (11:32.92) of Fergus Falls was fourth, Sophia Negen (11:39.85) of Willmar placed fifth and Cassie Wellman (11:52.92) of Fergus Falls was sixth.

“Cassie’s time was a PR and Estee ran just off her season best,” commented Fergus Falls Head Coach Niki Welde.  “Great performances by both!”

In the long jump finals, Ella Starzl placed fourth with a PR of 16-feet-9-and-3-quarter-inches.  Ava Thoennes of Rocori (17-09.50) and Kaija Schneider of Alexandria (16-11.00) qualified for state in the event.  Starzl was eleventh in the high jump (4-09.00).  Grace Gunderson of Detroit Lakes 95-05.00) and Thoennes (5-03.00) finished first and second, while Danica Pederson (5-03.00) of New London-Spicer and Rylee Johnson (5-03.00) of the Lakers also qualified for state.

“Ella pulled out her best jump of the season on her last jump of the season, we couldn’t have asked more of her,” stated Coach Welde.

Violet McConn (1:02.20) qualified for finals in the 400 meter dash, running her best time of the season.  “That race on Saturday will be really exciting,” said Welde.  “The fastest time going into the meet is 1:01.16 and eighth place is at 1:02.82.  Violet falls right in the mix.”
