Becker Takes Third in 3A with Buzzer Beater Win Over Alexandria

Senior Maren Westin buried a game winning 3-point shot at the buzzer to lift top-seeded Becker to a 57-56 win over the Alexandria Cardinals in the Class 3A third place game on Saturday afternoon at Gangelhoff Center on the campus of Concordia University in St. Paul.

Alexandria scored the first 9 points of the game and led 11-2 before Becker got on a roll and took a 25-22 halftime advantage.  The Cardinals evened the score at 30-30 and it was game on from there.  Alexandria led 50-41 with under four minutes to go, but the Bulldogs finished the game on a 16-6 run.

Westin hit her first 3-pointer of the game with under 25 seconds remaining to pull the Bulldogs event at 54-54.  After Hadley Thul made a two-point field goal with just 7 seconds on the clock to give the Cardinals a 56-54 lead, Westin delivered with the game winner as time expired.

Seniors Danielle Nuest (21 points, 6 rebounds), Ayla Brown (16 points) and Westin (14 points, 6 rebounds) combined to hit 7-of-11 3’s in the second half to lead Becker to their 27th win of the season and a third place finish.  The top-seeds were bumped into the third place game with a heartbreaking 60-59 loss to Stewartville in the semifinals.

Thul (24 points, 10 rebounds) registered a double-double to lead the lady Cards and Chloe Scholl joined her in double figures with 18 points.

Alexandria ends the season with a record of 25-6.
