Alexandria Boys Open State Hockey Tournament Play with 6-3 Loss to Mahtomedi

The Alexandria boys’ hockey team established a 3-2 first period lead in their quarterfinal game with Mahtomedi on Wednesday at the Class A State Hockey Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.  They couldn’t make that lead stand up though, as Mahtomedi scored the equalizer in the second period and finished the game with three third period goals to post a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals.

Corey Bohmert got Mahtomedi off to an early lead with a goal 5:47 into the game, assisted by David Wolsfeld.  At 7:59, Alexandria’s Tyler Kludt tied the game with an assist from Evan AndersonGavin Olson then gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with an unassisted tally at 9:18.  A power play goal by Seth Nelson tied the game at 2-2 at the 10:34 mark of the opening period.  Assists went to Cavanaugh Bruner and Bohmert.  Leo Kompelien’s goal at 11:56, assisted by Joe Lamski, put Alexandria back on top at 3-2.

The lone goal of the second period went to Bohmert from Wolsfeld and Charles Drage at 16:43.  That goal pulled Mahtomedi even at 3-3 after two periods.

Drage got the game winner just 37 seconds into the final period, unassisted and Bohmert completed his hat trick at 5:40 of the third from Drage and Samuel HarrisCarson Marshall added an unassisted goal to end the scoring at 11:30.

Mahtomedi had 48 shots on goal, while Alexandria had 18 shots.  Alexandria net minder Elijah Rasmussen had 42 saves, while Charles Brandt of Mahtomedi had 15.

Alexandria will face Luverne in a consolation semifinal contest at 10:00am Thursday at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
