Kallyn Grove scored 6 overtime points, had 3 steals and blocked a shot in the extra session to help lead the Underwood girls’ basketball team to a thrilling 63-59 win over New York Mills on Saturday afternoon in Perham, advancing the Rockets to the Section 6A semifinals on Tuesday night back at ‘The Hive’.

Underwood led 26-20 at halftime, however, the Eagles scored the first 8 points of the second half to take a 28-26 lead.  Underwood responded with a 15-0 run with Liz Lukken scoring 11 of the 15 points, lifting the Rockets to a 41-28 lead with under 8 minutes remaining in the game.  Mills then scored 15 of the next 19 points to draw to within two points at 45-43.  An Isabella Bauck 3-point field goal with six seconds remaining in regulation brought the game into a 50-50 tie and it stayed that way when Mia Blaskowski missed a free throw with 4.5 seconds on the clock.

The overtime started with Bauck making one of two free throws for a 51-50 New York Mills lead.  After a pair of missed Underwood free throws, Maya Radniecki buried a 3-pointer for her only points of the day, giving the Eagles a 54-50 advantage.  That’s when Grove started her streak of amazing play, hitting a fifteen foot jumper to make it 54-52, stealing the ball and feeding Liz Lukken who made the tying basket at 54-54, coming up with another steal and turning it into two points for a 56-54 Underwood lead.   Following a New York Mills turnover, Blaskowski nailed a pair of free throws for a 58-54 Rocket lead.  Aidyn Baune hit two foul shots to trim the lead to 58-56, but Grove’s field goal with 56 seconds remaining in OT made it a 60-56 Underwood lead.  A deep 3 by Bauck cut the Rockets lead to one point at 60-59, but Blaskowski made two more free throws with 28 seconds on the clock to increase the lead to 62-59.  A Grove steal with seven seconds left sealed the deal as Mo Bugbee made one of two free throws with 1.7 seconds to go for the final 4 point margin.

Liz Lukken led the Rockets with 28 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.  Grove finished with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 6 helpers, and Bugbee had 9 points and 5 assists.  Mia Blaskowski chipped in with 8 points and 4 rebounds.

"We struggled to get ourselves into good offensive possessions, we turned the ball over way too many times and we looked out of sorts today," said Head Coach Brian Hovland.   "We got the win against a very good team that played really well and at this point in the season surviving and advancing is all that matters.  We will need to play with more confidence vs. Henning on Tuesday.  I am proud of how we found a way to win even when things looked bleak.  Kallyn had a big second half for us on both ends of the floor and Liz had a great all around offensive game, she has been fighting a little sickness and tonight she was back to her normal self."

Ayla Olson registered a double-double (19 points, 14 rebounds) to lead the Eagles.  Kali Olson contributed 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, and Bauck finished with 13 points.

New York Mills ends the season with an 18-9 record.

Underwood takes a 24-3 record and a fifteen game winning streak into their semifinal contest on Tuesday night.
