Madison Carsten buried 4 three-pointers on the way to a 22 point night, Montana Carsten added 3 3’s for her nine points and Payton Gravelle scored 11 points, making 7-of-8 free throws as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines pulled out an impressive 57-43 road win over the Hawley Nuggets to open the Section 6A girls’ basketball playoffs on Thursday night.

“Great all around effort from our girls tonight,” commented Wadena-Deer Creek Head Coach Jordan Cresap. “We knew we had a challenge with a well-coached and talented Hawley team, but I thought our kids really stepped up and played with poise, especially in the second half. We executed our game plan well and had many different kids making positive contributions. Proud of our defensive effort! Now to prepare for a tough Pelican Rapids team!”

Anna Steer (21 points, 3-3’s), Izzy Steer (13 points, 2-3’s) and Emma Brookshire (9 points, 2-3’s) were the scoring leaders for Hawley.

Wadena-Deer Creek will travel to Pelican Rapids for a quarterfinal round contest at 7:00pm Saturday.
