The Underwood girls’ basketball team improved their season record to 8-1 with a 72-57 win over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy on Friday night. The Rockets hit 10 3-point field goals and assisted on 18 baskets in the win. Underwood shot 54% (28-51) for the night and made 47% (10-21) of their 3’s.
Liz Lukken led the Rockets with 21 points, including three 3’s. Kallyn Grove added 17 points, hitting four 3’s, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Mo Bugbee was also in double figures with 11 points, while adding a team high 8 assists. Mia Blaskowski finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds and Zoey Swanson had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
“Coming off a loss at Hancock, I was real proud of how the girls responded,” said Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland. “We stuck to the defensive game plan and shot the ball well. I thought Kallyn really had a nice all-around game.”
Leaders for Hillcrest were Maddie Ballweg (27 points, 5 rebounds), Ruby Peterson (15 points, 5 steals, 3 assists) and Ella Knutson (8 points, 7 rebounds).
“The girls played extremely hard, but Underwood’s size and hot shooting was too much to overcome tonight,” reported Hillcrest Head Coach Hannah Clark. “We had a couple runs in the second half, but Underwood seemed to have an answer for every run. Maddie Ballweg led us offensively and did a great job finishing at the rim. I also though Ruby played a nice, all-around game for us.”
Hillcrest (9-4, 5-3 LEC) has a quick turn-around as they have a home game against Park Christian on Saturday.
Underwood (10-3, 7-1 LEC) will host Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal in a non-conference game on Tuesday night.
