Underwood took the short drive to Bertha-Hewitt for the opening game of the high school boys’ basketball season on Friday night.  The Bears were leading 44-25 at the half and went on to record a 75-54 victory over the Rockets.

The Rockets were shorthanded, missing two starters (Drew Evavold and Gavin Pausch) due to illness, and a third one in Cole Peterson who wasn’t playing in the first half of the game due to missing practice time earlier this season.

“We struggled in many aspects of the game tonight, especially on the defensive end, stopping the dribble drive and finishing with a rebound,” noted Underwood Head Coach Kellen Shebeck.  “We allowed 15 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second chance points.  It’s the first game of the year and the guys will bounce back and learn from this game.  I’m excited to move on and improve from here.”

Owen Harig went 3-for-4 from 3-point range and played solid defense to lead Underwood.  Kaleb Hammes also had a well-rounded game with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.

Underwood will travel to Sebeka on Thursday night.
