The New York Mills boys’ basketball team has a tough act to follow.  The 2021-22 version of the Eagles recorded the best record in school history (28-2), went undefeated in conference play (14-0) on the way to the Park Region Conference title, had 4 players named to the All-Conference team, including the PRC MVP, and won a sub-section championship.  Having lost their top six players to graduation, the Eagles have a lot of holes to fill in 2022-23.

“We will have a lot of minutes to fill, but we have a very athletic group of seniors looking to take some of those minutes this season, as well as a few key juniors,” stated Head Coach Mike Baune.  “Our plan is to play fast on both offense and defense and to use our athleticism to our advantage.  We will need some shooters and scorers to step up in order for us to be competitive.  I expect us to be very solid defensively, while continuing to develop offensive players and our offense as a whole as the season progresses.  Turning defense into offense will be a key point of emphasis for us this season.”

Seniors Hunter Holtti (G), Brayden Ehnert (G) and Braden Partlow (G), and freshmen Sam Kopveiler (F) and Teagan Lausten (F) are the top candidates for varsity playing time.  Zach Christenson will serve as assistant coach.

Baune points to Henning, Wadena-Deer Creek and Pillager as the top teams in the Park Region Conference, while BBE, Wheaton/Herman-Norcross and Henning are the teams to beat in Section 6A.
