Rothsay traveled to Evansville on Tuesday night where the Tigers dropped a Little Eight Conference volleyball match to the Chargers, 3-0 (25-18, 28-26, 25-13).

“This was a better match for us as we were more aggressive on attacking the ball,” stated Brandon-Evansville Head Coach Kelly Olson.  “I felt against New York Mills on Monday we were tentative on the court, but against Rothsay we really attacked the ball well.  The first set we struggled to close them out, allowing a little run at the end of the set.  That really set the momentum up for them to carry it into set two, where we saw them be the more aggressive team in most aspects.  We did do a great job of continuing to side them out.  I felt that the second set our serve receive was really good; it kept us in the match.  We outlasted them and got that final two point advantage.  Moving into the third set it was tight until midway through, when we capitalized on some mistakes they made, as well as getting good touches at the net on their attacks.  I would like to see our defense start being more active.  With lineup changes we always have to over communicate, and that will be something we will work on.  For the most part it was a good match for us and look forward to another test Thursday in Underwood.”

“Once we got into the rhythm of the match I thought we competed well,” said Rothsay Head Coach John Reber. “The Chargers hit some great perimeter shots which exerted a lot of pressure on our defense, not only to dig but to make those split-second decisions as to whether the ball is going to be in or out. The Chargers also scored off of our blockers' hands and arms through the first and into the start of the second set. Once our block started catching on midway through the second, that relieved some of that defensive pressure and allowed for us to set up better scoring chances in transition. After a dramatic finish in the second set, we were able to sustain into the start of the third, matching the Chargers point-for-point until they started pulling away at 9-10. That's a good mental test - after losing a close set in overtime, it's easy to be discouraged and distracted once play continues, but we picked up right where we left off, so I'm happy about that. Our serve receive passing also started to pick up as the match went on, which is encouraging as we continue our way through a busy stretch of matches over the next two weeks.”

Rothsay will host Hancock on Thursday and will participate in the Bertha-Hewitt Tournament on Saturday.

Brandon-Evansville has a LEC matchup at Underwood on Thursday night.
