Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 wound up splitting a pair of games with Wadena on Tuesday night, winning the opener 8-5 and dropping the nightcap 15-5 on a beautiful summer night at American Legion Field at DeLagoon Park in Fergus Falls.

Riston Albert (5IP, 8H, 5ER, 4BB, 4K) stated on the mound in game one and went the first five innings to collect his second victory of the year.  Carter Thielke (2IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K) picked up his first save of the season.

Leading hitters for Post 30 were Isaac Johnson (3-4, RBI), Ben Swanson (1-2, BB, RBI), Colin Becker (1-2, BB, RBI) and Ethan Gronwold (2-3, RBI).

Post 30 struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning by a leadoff walk from Becker and a sacrifice fly from Will Gronwold.  Wadena answered right back in the top of the third inning via two hits and a walk.  Post 30 went on to score 3 runs in the third, 2 in the fourth and 2 in the 5th on the way to the win.

“Our defense really stood up in this game and played extremely well behind Riston,” noted Post 30 Head Coach Trevor Larson.  “Riston battled with his control all day, but found a way to give us quality innings against a very good Wadena team.  The boys did a nice job of making the plays you should make and also going above and beyond, turning in some big double plays.  We played with confidence and great energy all game long.  It was also the first time all year we didn’t commit an error.  Offensively, I liked how we put the ball in play and ran the bases.  Lots of simple approaches at the plate turned into positives for our ball club.”

Game two got off to a bad start as Wadena scored five times in the first inning off 5 hits and 1 error.  They added 7 runs in the top of the 7th on 6 hits and one error.  Post 30 climbed back into the game by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it an 8-5 ball game, but couldn’t make it any closer.  Leading hitters were Thielke (1-3, 2R), Becker (1-3, 2RBI) and Owen Krueger (1-3, RBK).

“Game two we made two errors that cost us seven runs,” reported Coach Larson.  “Those plays are often the difference between winning and losing ball games.  I did like how we battled offensively and had good at bats deep into the game.”

Post 30 travels to Brainerd on Thursday for two games starting at 5:00pm.
