American Legion Post 30 of Fergus Falls hosted East Grand Forks on Monday night at DeLagoon Park with Post 30 falling in game one, 14-1, but prevailing in game two, 7-6.

“We made it through the first game just fine without the weather impacting us,” stated Fergus Falls Head Coach Trevor Larson.  “In game two we recorded one out and then had a 25 minute rain delay.”

Game one hitting leaders were Ben Swanson (2-3) and Brandon Brown (1-1).  “We struggled early with our bats against a very good college pitcher,” noted Coach Larson.  “EGF also did a nice job of putting the ball in play hard.  We needed to bring more energy in game one.”

Will Gronwold (2IP, 1H, 1ER, 0BB, 3K) picked up the victory in relief in game two.  Riston Albert (5IP, 3H, 5R, 3ER, 4BB, 5K) pitched well in the starting assignment.  Isaac Johnson (3-4, 2RBI), Collin Becker (2-4), Andrew Johnson (2-4) and Evan Lindgren (2-3, 3B, RBI) led the offensive attack for Post 30.

East Grand Forks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first four innings.  They plated 3 runs in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0.  Post 30’s bats came alive in their half of the fifth inning, putting up 5 runs on 6 hits to take a 5-4 advantage.  EGF answered back with single runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.  Isaac Johnson and Colin Becker started the bottom of the seventh with sharp singles to put runners on second and third with nobody out.  After a pop out and an intentional walk to load the bases, Brandon Brown hit a sacrifice fly to left field, tying the game.  With two outs and the potential winning run on second base, Will Gronwold singled to center field to cap the come back and win in walk-off fashion.

“Today was a tale of two very different games,” explained Larson.  “We know what we are capable of as a team, but we also know we need to bring energy every single game.  I can’t say enough about the effort from Riston Albert on the mound.  Nothing seems to faze him.  He stays call and collected at all times.  This was a fun comeback win against a district rival.”

Post 30 continues action on Thursday in Bemidji with two games, starting at 4:30pm.
