Roberts Delivers Walk-Off Hit as New York Mills Claims 3rd Place in Class A State Tournament

Bode Roberts delivered a walk-off single, scoring Jonah Johnson who had doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading New York Mills to a thrilling 9-8 victory over Sacred Heart in the 3rd place game of the Minnesota Class A State High School Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud.

Eight different Eagles had hits and six different players drove in runs in the game.  Leading the way with multiple hits were Montgomery Briard (3-4, 2R), Jacob Guck (2-4, 3B, 2RBI, R), Johnson (2-5, 2B, RBI, R) and Cody Barthel (2-4, 2B).  Roberts and Breck Hensch each drove in a pair of runs, while Bren Salo and Jonah Ruther each scored twice.  Salo also swiped a pair of bases. 

Cody Barthel (2IP, 1H) got the win in relief of Brayden Ehnert and Salo.

New York Mills had to fight back from a 5-0 deficit after Sacred Heart scored five times in the top of the first inning.  The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Sacred Heart picked up a run in the top of the second for a 6-2 lead.  Two runs in the bottom of the second and two more in the home half of the third tied the game at 6-6.  The game remained tied at 8-8 after each team scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning, setting the stage for the walk-off win by the Eagles.

New York Mills finishes the season with a 24-4 record.
