The Otter boys’ golf team competed at the section 8AA golf tournament on Monday and Tuesday this week at Bemidji Town and Country Club.  The section tournament is both a team and individual competition to try to qualify for the state golf tournament.

The Otter boys came into the meet ranked 3rd in the section behind Roseau and Warroad.  After day 1, the boys were in 2nd place as a team after a team score of 327. Scoring for the Otters were Riley McGovern - 79, Adam Kennedy - 81, Ryan Nelson - 82
Gavin Goepferd - 85.

Sam Dirkman added an 89 while Charlie Fuder finished with a 93.

The determined Otters showed up on day 2 with a goal to make a comeback and qualify for the state tournament as a team.  After a slow start, the Otters got it within 2 shots of Roseau with 4 holes to go.  The boys shot an impressive 321 to finish 7 strokes behind Roseau over 36 holes.

Two Otter golfers were able to qualify for the state meet which is an impressive accomplishment.  Sophomore, Riley McGovern, shot 79-75 to finish solo 2nd while sophomore, Ryan Nelson, shot 82-76 to finish in 5th place.  The sophomore duo are the first Otters to qualify for the state tournament since 2018.  Riley and Ryan will play in the AA state tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek golf course in Jordan on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Perham’s Marcus Belka claimed medalist honors with a two day total of 152 (77-75).  The other individual qualifiers were Jayson Shaugabay (78-78=156) of Warroad and Jack Justesen (82-77=159) of Hawley.
