The Perham baseball team swept a pair of games in the Section 6A Tournament on Thursday, beating Pelican Rapids 18-1 and handing Fergus Falls an 8-1 loss at Al Krueger Field at Tuffy’s Stadium in Perham. The Yellowjackets are undefeated in the tournament and will play against the other unbeaten team in the tournament, Roseau at 4:30pm Tuesday at Park Rapids.
Perham jumped out to a 9-0 first inning lead against Pelican Rapids and added seven more runs in the third and two in the fourth.
Chas Melvin (2-3, HR, 3RBI, 4R, BB), Logan Pulju (1-2, HR, 2RBI, 2R, BB) and Mason Schepper (1-3, HR, 2RBI, R) all homered for Perham. Ben Shumansky (2-4, 2B, 3RBI), Rian Solberg (2-3, 2B, 2RBI, 2R) and Austin Aanenson (1-2, 2RBI, 3R, 2BB) also had good days at the plate. Gage Germolus (4IP, 2H, 1ER, 6K, 1BB) was the winning pitcher and Austin Schmelz pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
The only run scored by the Vikings came on a solo home run by Peyton Blakeway in the fourth inning. Austin Stoll had a double, while Ethan Sjostrom and Cody Nord each added a single for Pelican Rapids. The Vikings were eliminated by DGF, 8-7, in their second game of the day.
The Yellowjackets continued their long ball assault by hitting four round trippers in the win over Fergus Falls. Gamble Bye (2-3, HR, RBI, 2R), Melvin (2-3, 2B, HR, 2RBI, 3R, BB), Shumansky (3-4, 2B, HR, 2RBI, R) and Solberg (1-4, HR, 3RBI, R) all went deep in the game. Logan Pulju (2-2, 2B, 2BB) also contributed. Melvin (6IP, 5H, 0R, 7K, 1BB) threw six shutout innings to earn the win.
Ethan Gronwold (2-3, R), Andrew Johnson (2-3), Will Gronwold (1-3) and Carston Fronning (1-3) had the Otter hits in the game. Carter Thielke had a stolen base.
Fergus Falls will play an elimination game at 2:00pm Tuesday against Warroad in Park Rapids.
