West Central Area placed sixth in the boys competition and seventh in the girls event at the West Central Conference Track and Field Championships at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood on Tuesday, May 17.

“We battled thru some elements for sure, the weather turned about half way thru the meet but the kids pushed through it all,” said WCA Head Coach David Schleicher.  “Lexi Bright took command of her 800 and 1600 meter races.  She’s been running very strong as of late she also had a season best jump in the long jump to take silver there.  We just haven’t had a lot of time this season to work out the kinks in the jumps but she came thru when she needed in the finals.”

Tyler Stone battled thru the elements and some tough competition as well, placing second in the discus.  “He has his sights locked in on a trip to state,” stated Coach Schleicher. “Maci Robinson threw a personal best in shot put and Taylor Bennett had another strong performance and is peaking at the right time we feel.”

Schleicher continued, “We competed hard in our first year in the new Conference.  There are some power house teams to contend with and I feel we held our own.  We definitely got a look at areas we need to improve on to be contenders next season and I have no doubt the kids will respond next year. Again we had some younger athletes competing at the varsity level and they did fantastic, the experience they are getting will pay off in the years to come for us.  We were happy with the numbers and times given the weather, it’s always a challenge to hold focus in inclement weather but as a team we did well.”
