On Thursday, May 26, the 2022 Hillcrest Hall of Fame Banquet will be held.  The inductees this year are Cathy (Selvig) Johnson from the class of 1999 and Missi (Kvamme) Isaac from the class of 1987.  The 2001 Football Team will be inducted as a Legacy Team.  They are the only Hillcrest team to ever with a State Championship.

2022 Inductees

VOLLEYBALL, BASKETBALL & TRACK
Hillcrest Lutheran Academy is proud to induct Cathy (Selvig) Johnson, HLA Class of 1999, on this 26th day of May 2022, into the Hillcrest Athletics Hall of Fame. Cathy was the first Lady Comet to letter four years in three different sports: volleyball, basketball, and track. She was all-conference three times in both basketball and volleyball, and she set school records in the high jump and the 1600 meter run. She also set the single-game scoring record in basketball with 32 points and still holds the career rebounding record (640). She was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1999.

Cathy's leadership skills were evident as she captained all three sports her senior year, leading by word and by example. Anyone who watched her play would immediately notice two things; her relentless effort and her gracious attitude toward both teammates and opponents. Her Christ-like character was in evidence wherever she went and whatever she did. Clearly, Cathy was much more than an athlete, demonstrated by her selection as the winner of the Triple A Award for excellence in academics, arts, and athletics.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." (Colossians 3:23)

BASKETBALL & VOLLEYBALL
Hillcrest Lutheran Academy is proud to induct Missi (Kvamme) Isaac, HLA Class of 1987, on this 26th day of May 2022, into the Hillcrest Athletics Hall of Fame. Despite playing only two years, Missi established school records for points in a season (357) and points in a career (626), averaging 16.1 points per game for her HLA career. She made an immediate impact on Lady Comets basketball, leading the team to an all-time best 17-2 record and a Little Valley Conference championship. She was named all-conference both years and was the LVC Most Valuable Player her senior year.

Missi's athleticism, especially her outstanding jumping ability, carried over into volleyball as she earned all-conference honors in that sport also. It was not possible to out-work her and her tenacity was on display every time she took the court, but her love for Christ illuminated her countenance simultaneously. She was recognized for her leadership as a team captain, and later Missi returned to serve on the girls basketball coaching staff at HLA. An outstanding student as well, she received the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award.

"It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights." (2 Samuel 22:33-34)

2001 FOOTBALL 9-MAN STATE CHAMPIONS
After beginning the season a disappointing 1-4, the 2001 Comets went on a nine-game winning streak to finish 10-4 and take home Hillcrest's first and only state team title in any sport. They rolled over three opponents 76-22 in the section tournament, including a beatdown of the #2 team in the state, Chokio-Alberta-Herman-Norcross, in the Fargodome for the section title. They followed that up by demolishing three state tournament teams by a combined score of 101-37, culminating with a 37-7 win over Ada-Borup in the Metrodome for the state championship.

Coach Richard Risbrudt had led the Comets to four previous state title games, but his 2001 team would not be denied. Quarterback Steve Moline led the way with a school record 3,145 total yards and 35 touchdowns rushing and passing, and Luke Hansen set a record for receiving yards while intercepting 8 passes on defense. Nick Hansen's inspirational return to his middle linebacker spot for the state playoff games was a huge boost as he led the team in tackles in all 3 games and had a pick 6 in the championship game.

The 2001 team also excelled in the classroom with the state's best academic record (3.73 GPA), an asset that certainly contributed to their ability to comprehend offensive coordinator Jake Carr's complex spread offense that included over 400 sets.
