The West Central Area boys’ and girls’ track and field teams both placed sixth at the Minnewaska Area Track and Field Meet on Tuesday, May 3 in Glenwood. The lady Knights scored 42 points and the boys’ ended up with 56. Sauk Centre won the boys’ team title with 184 points and Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball won the girls’ championship with 189 points. Minnewaska Area was runner-up in both events.
“We seemed a little flat this week coming off prom weekend, however, we did see a few personal bests,” stated Head Coach Dave Schleicher of the West Central Area Track and Field Teams.
Anthony Sykora continues to improve in his 100 meter, posting a personal record time and Shad Swanson continues to post solid times in the 3200.
“Throwers coach Matt Nemec has his kids dialing in closer to where they need to be and it’s showing in their continued improvement,” noted Coach Schleicher. “Tyler Stone posted a new PR to win discus with a throw of 137 feet. He has been setting new PRs in each meet so far this spring. Jumpers seemed to all be plagued with inconsistent steps but posted some solid marks regardless. It’s been a rough spring to get accurate steps recorded down on our runway and hallway steps are only a ballpark mark for them. The more meets we get the more consistency they will have and we expect some good jumps in the meets to come. We’ve brought up some eager seventh and eighth graders to compete for us. Aaron Biss and Michael Girard ran solid 800’s for us and the experience for them will pay off by seasons end for us.”
Seventh-grader Skylar Larue posted a 24’9 jump in her first competition, Jayden Styba post a new PR as well.
Roman Mihailovshi had a PR in high jump at 5’10. “I believe he is right on the cusp of some big jumps he is a legitimate 6’4 jumper when he puts it all together and we’re very close,” added Coach Schleicher.
Taylor Bennett posted a seasons best in the 3200 meter run and Lexi Bright had a solid day for the lady Knights as she continues to build towards a solid run at state in the 800 and mile.
“We had a solid day competing against some elite programs,” concluded Schleicher. “We didn’t score the points we usually do but we continue to compete hard and improve. The more repetitions we can get on a track, the more we will improve as a team. I still expect us to be in the mix come Conference time.”
