On Sunday, April 10, the 2021-22 Comet Basketball team celebrated their great season at their annual awards night. Coach Ryan Garvin reflected on the season from a team and individual perspective noting that the Comets were able to experience a lot of on-the-court success and win a share of the Little 8 Conference Title with the Ashby Arrows.

Some notable individual records included:

  • MVP & 1st Team Little 8 All-Conference awards for Sam Brumfield
  • 3rd Team Little 8 All-Conference awards for Noah Brumfield & Justin Petersen
  • Pheasant All-Conference Awards for Sam Brumfield and Justin Petersen
  • Pheasant Honorable Mention for Noah Brumfield

Rebounding Champion: Last year, the award went to Micah Foss. This year, with 170 rebounds for the season, Noah Brumfield.

Most Improved Player: Last year the award went to Yuchan Ha. This year Gabe Swedenburg was voted on by his teammates as the most improved player.

6th Man Award:  Last year the award was given to Noah Brumfield. This year: Zayne Weinrich.

The Clamp Defensive award is given to the varsity team's best performing defensive player as voted by the players. Last year the award went to Micah Foss. This year, the players voted for Yuchan Ha.

Cody Aasness says, “it’s better to be a plow in the ground than a flash in the pan.” Last year, Noah Bjorndahl received the award. This year Sam Brumfield received the award.

Every team needs a player who will do all of the dirty work. This effort doesn’t necessarily translate into statistics, but this toughness and grit is invaluable to any great team. Last year, Joel Quam won this award and this year the Comets awarded it to Caden Fischer.

As a part of the Hillcrest basketball program, we hope to develop shot makers. This year we had 11 boys generate Top 10 scores in different shooting drills. But Justin Petersen & Sam Brumfield both set and shared a high score, each achieving 8 total Top 10s.

Sam Brumfield was voted, by his teammates, MVP. Additionally, Sam was awarded the Free Throw Champion award for shooting free throws at an almost 84% clip in practice. Coach Garvin reflected that, "This year, we had 5 guys shoot 70% or better during the season and made them when it mattered."

To add to his season accolades, Sam set the game scoring record this year against Battle Lake scoring 45 on 17-22 shooting and also set the Single-Season Scoring Record with 714 points. He also achieved the Single Season Steals record with 89 eclipsing Nick Hansen's previously held record of 81(2002). Lastly, the Deflector Award, which goes to the player with the most deflections in games within a season was Sam Brumfield.

Coach Garvin also noted that the captains of the 2022-2023 Comets would be Noah Brumfield, Justin Petersen, and Luke Christensen.
