New York Mills, the top seeded team in the North half of Section 6A, captured a pair of playoff wins this past week, beating Park Christian School 73-34 on Thursday and then knocking off Battle Lake 69-44 in the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Saturday at ‘The Hive’ in Perham.

“The game against Park Christian was very special for the seniors, as it was their last home game ever and they wanted to go out the right way,” shared New York Mills Head Coach Mike Baune.  “It was important to them that they played up to my standards and their own standards and they certainly did.  We put pressure on the whole game and were able to come away with a big win.”

The Eagles were led by Tate Olson (29 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists), Jack Peeters (7 points, 9 assists), Noah Noffsinger (6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), Jonah Johnson (13 points), Bryan Bohn (7 points, 4 rebounds) and Breck Hensch (6 points, 4 rebounds).

On Saturday Olson registered a double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds, while adding 4 assists and 7 steals to lead the Eagles once again.  Johnson contributed 21 points, 5 boards and 9 steals, Noffsinger had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, Peeters snagged 7 rebounds and Hensch chipped in with 5 points and 4 rebounds.

“We decided to surprise the Battlers a bit with something they hadn’t seen on film and we came out in a 1-3-1 zone press,” said Coach Baune.  “It worked even better that we though as they obviously had not prepared for it and struggled to adjust.  We started off the game forcing a ton of turnovers and sped to a 32-4 lead deep into the first half.  That was enough to salt the game away.  Overall we forced 31 turnovers, which really gave us confidence and some easy looks.”

New York Mills will play Henning at 7:00pm Tuesday in Perham for the North Sub-Section 6A championship and a berth in the Section 6A title game on Friday.
