The Hancock lady Owls are the Section 6A girls’ basketball champions.  They earned a trip to the Class A State Tournament with a 61-56 win over Underwood on Friday night at the Kennedy Secondary School Gold Gymnasium in Fergus Falls.

Hancock jumped out to an 11-0 lead and led 30-13 before Underwood closed the first half on a 12 point run to trim the Owls lead to 30-25 at the half.  Hancock scored the first six points of the second half to get the lead back to double digits, but Underwood fought back and actually took a one point lead with 3:45 remaining in the game.  The Owls responded by getting the lead back on their next possession and never relinquished it.

Liz Lukken led Underwood with 21 points and Mo Bugbee had a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and added 3 assists.  Ezrah Baker contributed 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists and Kallyn Grove distributed a team high 6 assists.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how these girls fought till the absolute end,” commented Underwood Head Coach Brian Hovland.  “They left everything on the floor. They had a tremendous season.  It’s sad for the two seniors but like I told them in the locker room afterwards they will always be part of this team/family.”

The Owls were led by Kaitlyn Rohloff with 20 points and 3 assists.  Misti Zempel and Kaitlyn Staples added 13 and 12 points, respectively, and Carlee Hanson chipped in with 10 points and 7 assists.  Zempel led the Owls with 7 rebounds.

Underwood ends their season with a record of 23-4.

Hancock is 27-1 and the Owls will take a 14 game winning streak to the state tournament.
