The Fergus Falls Otter girls basketball team defeated the Menahga Braves 51-29 Friday night in the Section 8AA Championship game at Detroit Lakes High School. Strong defense and the scoring prowess of Ellie Colbeck enabled the Otters to punch their ticket to next weeks’ State Tournament in the Twin Cities.

The Otters will play at either 6 or 8 p.m. Wednesday either Williams Arena or Maturi Pavilion on the University of Minnesota Campus. Their opponent, venue, and game time will be determined later this weekend following seeding.

Colbeck was on fire to begin the game and opened the scoring with a baseline jumper and a pair of free-throws for an early 4-0 Otter lead. Janie Tormanen's basket got Menahga on the scoreboard. A Colbeck trey and Ainsley Hansen's half court steal and lay-up gave Fergus Falls a 9-2 advantage 3 1/2 minutes into the contest. The lead grew to 10 (17-7) at the 11:50 mark following another 3-pointer from Colbeck and she added another before the half ended with the Otters holding the lead 24-14. Colbeck totaled 18 first half points as the Otters shot 53% (9-17). Menahga was cold from the field in the half making just 6-of-21 (28%) attempts as the Otters smothering defense intensely challenged every attempt. Tormanen kept the Braves in the contest with 8 points.

The second half saw Menahga's shooting woes continue as the Otters slowly built the lead to 18 (37-19) with 11:13 to go following a Brynn Sternberg 3-pointer. The Braves got to within 15  (39-24) following Lela Peterson's trey with just under 8 minutes to go, but no closer as the lead reached 23 (47-24) with 6 minutes left. The Otters were content to milk the clock and have extended possessions the final minutes.

Ainsley Hansen had a team high 9 rebounds, Ellie Colbeck grabbed 7 and Hannah Polejewski came up with 5.  Hansen and Polejewski were defensive pillars of strength in the post throughout the game, making Tormanen earn everything she got.

Each team had only one player in double figures as Colbeck had a game-high 34 and Tormanen 15 for Menahga. The Otters shot 48% (17-of-35) for the game, with Menahga just 10-of-43 for 23%. The Brave's stellar season ends with a final 26-3 record.

After a basket late in the first half, Colbeck attained yet another record eclipsing the girls single season scoring mark of 711 by Bailey Strand, now totaling 729.
