The top two seeds in the Section 6A Boys’ Hockey Tournament squared off at the MAC in St. Cloud on Thursday night with top-seeded Alexandria coming up with a 4-2 victory over second-seeded Fergus Falls.  The Cardinals had 26 shots on goal and the Otters finished with 28 shots.

Alexandria scored at 16:29 of the first period when Leo Kompelien’s goal ricocheted off a skate and into the Otter net.  Gavin Olson and Joe Lamski earned assists on the goal.

An unassisted tally by Michael DeBrito at 4:04 of the second period pulled the Otters even.  Alexandria regained the lead at 8:55 of the period on a goal by Josiah Gronholz, assisted by Tyler Kludt and Brycen Berg.  Fergus Falls tied the game at 2-2 with 1:30 left in the period when Shane Zierden banged home a rebound on the power play with assists from Kellen Stenstrom and DeBrito.

The Cardinals were able to take a 3-2 lead on a goal by Olson 4:14 into the third period.  Kompelien had the only assist on the goal.

An apparent Otter goal was waved off by the officials, leaving the score at 3-2, Alexandria.  The Cards then added an empty net goal by Lamski with one minute to play to put the final at 4-2.

Ben Swanson came up with 22 saves on the 25 shots he faced in the Fergus Falls net and Teagan Pfeffer stopped 26 of the 28 shots the Otters put on the Alexandria net.

Fergus Falls ends their season with an 18-10 record.

Alexandria (20-5-2) will head to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul next week for the Class A State Boys’ Hockey Tournament.  It is their first state tournament trip since 2018.
