The Fergus Falls boys’ hockey team fell behind 3-0 after two periods of play on Thursday night against Sartell-St. Stephen.  The Otters rallied for 3 goals in the third period, forcing overtime, and won the game at 2:54 of the extra session on a goal by Carter Thielke.

Despite outshooting the Sabres 11-4 in the first period, the Otters found themselves trailing 1-0 after a goal by Parker Comstock with 43 seconds left in the period.  Tommy Franke and Billy Vogt assisted on the goal.

A pair of second period goals by Tory Lund gave the visitors a 3-0 lead.  Lund’s first goal was assisted by Franke and Comstock, and his second goal was unassisted.

A power play goal by Cole Zierden, setup by Isaac Johnson, sparked the Otters six minutes into the third period.  At the 9:34 mark, Johnson’s unassisted tally cut the lead to 3-2.  With 1:17 remaining in regulation time Michael DeBrito scored from Johnson and Colin Becker, tying the game at 3-3.

Thielke’s game winner was also setup by Isaac Johnson who completed a four point night with his playmaker (3 assists) and a goal.

Otter goalie Ben Swanson stopped 19 shots and Fergus Falls put 32 shots on the Sartell net.

“Great hockey game tonight,” stated Fergus Falls Head Coach Mike Donaghue.  “Great pace.  Sartell took advantage of some early opportunities and their goaltender played extremely well for the first two periods.  Cole Zierden found the back of the net on a power play to get us on the board, and Isaac Johnson found open space behind the net and was able to tuck one in to make it 3-2.  We were able to pull the goalie, call a timeout and draw up a face-off play that was perfectly executed for Isaac Johnson to hit Michael DeBrito for the game tying goal.  We had good pressure in OT and Isaac was behind the net and found Carter in the slot and with a quick release he was able to finish the comeback.”

Fergus Falls (11-5) will play at Sauk Rapids-Rice on Tuesday.
