Fergus Falls goalie Ben Swanson turned away 28 of 29 Little Falls shots on goal Saturday afternoon as the Otters stopped the Flyers 15 game winning streak with an impressive 5-1 victory at the Community Arena. Fergus Falls also had 29 shots on goal.
The Otters scored 1:10 into the game when Kellen Stenstrom beat Little Falls goalie Richie Varriano, converting a pass from Michael DeBrito. Shane Zierden’s power play goal at 7:39, was also setup by DeBrito, and it gave the Otters a 2-0 lead.
The lone Little Falls goal came at 3:42 of the second period when Hayden Johnson scored from Matt Filippi. The Otters closed the period with 3 straight goals as DeBrito scored from Andrew Johnson at 5:05 and from Stenstrom at 7:25. Stenstrom scored his second of the game just seven seconds after DeBrito’s second goal, assisted by Andrew Johnson and Shane Zierden.
“What a good win,” said Fergus Falls Head Coach Mike Donaghue. “We put 51 minutes together. Our wings did a really good job defensively. We were able to capitalize early on the power play and our penalty kill came up big when we needed them. Little Falls has a tremendous power play and we were able to minimize their chances on it. Shane Zierden was called on to play a bigger role and he did a great job. This was a total team effort.”
The Otters (10-5) ended a 3 game losing streak with the victory. They will host Crookston on Tuesday and Sartell on Thursday night.
