The Pelican Rapids boys’ basketball team recorded their third straight win on Thursday night when they defeated the Hawley Nuggets by the score of 79-60, improving their season record to 7-3 and putting their Heart O’ Lakes Conference mark at 3-0.   The loss was the first in nine games this season for Hawley.

“It was a nice win at home for our guys going up against a veteran Hawley squad that presents a lot of problems on both ends of the floor,” stated Pelican Rapids Head Coach John Gullingsrud. “We took care of the ball fairly well against their trapping defense and had a balanced scoring night with four guys in double figures which was good to see. Defensively, we had stretches of playing solid but overall have some work to do to be more consistent on that end.”

Timmy Guler and Brayden Ecker led the Vikings with 18 and 17 points, respectively.  Ian Fahje added 14 and Tanner Tollerud had 11.

Sam Senske scored 16 and Brevin Stoa added 13 to pace the Nuggets.

“Tonight we didn’t play our style of basketball at either end of the floor,” said Hawley Head Coach Nathan Stoa. “Pelican did a lot of really nice things to attack our defense, and they guarded incredibly well. That’s the best defensive team we’ve seen all year, in a scout or in person.”

Pelican Rapids will play Oak Grove from Fargo at Perham on Saturday.

Hawley squares off with Henning Saturday, also in Perham.
