The Alexandria Cardinals went to Brainerd Tuesday night for a tough Central Lakes Conference boys’ hockey matchup with the Warriors. Despite outshooting the Warriors 38-17 in the game, it took all of regulation time plus overtime for the Cardinals to come away with the 3-2 win.

Sophomore forward Gavin Olson got the Cardinals on the board shortly after the Warriors scored in the opening period to tie the game at one apiece. Senior Brycen Berg made it 2-1 off a nice feed from Josiah Gronholz. Berg went in alone on the Warriors goaltender and sniped a wrist shot over the glove. It was Berg’s second game in a row with a goal for the Cardinals. The Warriors were able to tie the game in the 2nd period.

The third period was all Cardinals who were able to sustain pressure in the offensive zone but were unable to capitalize on any scoring chances. With the way the game was going it was clear the winning goal wasn’t going to be pretty and that is exactly how Berg, his 2nd goal of the game, got the winning goal for the Cardinals about halfway through overtime. Josiah Gronholz and Brycen Berg found themselves in front of the net after a shot on goal, both having opportunities to whack at the puck before Berg was finally able to get it into the net. The win for the Cardinals was their 4th win in a row and improved to 6-1-1 in their last 8 games.

Senior Teagan Pfeffer made the start in goal for the Cardinals, stopping all shots that came his way after the Warriors 2nd goal in the 1st period. Totino-Grace comes to town on Saturday, JV starts at 5:00 pm and Varsity at 7:00 pm.
