The Ashby Arrows traveled to Rothsay on Tuesday night for a Little Eight Conference girls’ basketball matchup. It was a game where both teams were looking for their first LEC win. At half time the Arrows took a 24-22 point lead into the locker room. The Tigers went on to defeat the Arrows 52-43.

“The first half of basketball was one of the Arrows best so far this season, but when you are playing on someone else's home court you know the home team is going to defend their court to the bitter end,” commented Ashby Head Coach Brenda Johnson.

Ashby started off the night strong, taking a 22-20 halftime lead.

“The Tigers came out in the second half in a press that caused us unforced turnovers and impatient on offense,” said Coach Johnson. “In the second half the Tigers made some easy baskets off our turnovers, backdoor cuts, and scoring beyond the arc.”

Kenadi Carlsrud poured in a game high 30 points to lead the Tigers.  Summer Wigdahl, Elli Meyer and Savannah Sullivan added 6 points each.

“It was a great atmosphere for high school basketball,” commented Rothsay Head Coach Anita Heier.  “A fun back and forth game.  Both teams played hard, we just hit a few more shots down the stretch.”

Coach Johnson went on to share these thoughts about her young Ashby team.

BrookeLinn Finkelson has been working hard on offense and putting points on the board when she gets the ball in her hands, she had 8 points and 3 boards, and 2 blocks. Brooke got into foul trouble early and spent too much time on the bench tonight for the Arrows. We need her presence on the floor.

Celi Nelson had 10 rebounds and 23 points despite having two players hounding her all night. Celi continues to put the team on her shoulders and that's what you need from your senior and leading scorer. She leads by example.

We had 6 Arrows in the scoring column which shows me that these girls are gaining confidence in their shot and working hard on offense to get open. Ashley Paulson and Quynn Berhens, two starters had 4 points apiece. Quynn had 4 boards and Paulson 2.

Chloe Finkelson and Ayden Behrens as 8th graders are getting valuable minutes at the varsity level and continue to help the Arrows on both ends of the floor. Finkelson has 3 points, 3 boards, and a block.  Ayden continues to grab boards for us and plays with a lot of intensity. Behrens and Lucy Ohren come off the bench and give our starters a little rest, time to settle down if needed, and a spark on defense when we need it.

The Arrows youth showed through at crucial times tonight. Especially when the Tigers pressed us and when we couldn't get through the double screens they were setting on us, which gave Carlsrud too many uncontested three point attempts which she was able to knock down.

It was great to be part of a whole game. I know we lost, but the confidence these girls gained tonight was so important to our growth and development of our team as we begin the second half of our season.  This group of young ladies continue to play hard to the end and never give up.”

The Arrows travel to Evansville on Friday night for another LEC game against the Brandon-Evansville Chargers.

Rothsay will host Parkers Prairie on Friday night.
